Delicate snowflakes were to be seen gliding in perfect, wispy fractals at certain times today, and the sky was covered in thick clouds, but the promise of a thick snowfall wasn’t fulfilled. For those who wished some icy loveliness to descend around us, we have a collection of pictures from the first snowfall of the year, on the 20th. It melted away rather quickly, but the morning saw Thimphu clothed in pristine white, and briefly transformed into a winter wonderland.
Kuenselphodrang was undoubtedly the place to be at in the morning, for the best view of a white Thimphu
Two trees in a white world, at Kuenselphodrang
The Buddha at Kuenselphodrang appears to emerge from the mist
Around the Buddha, the Khandroms covered in snow are ethereally beautiful
A layer of snow accentuates the beauty of the Khandroms
Next to the Buddha
The Buddha, covered in snow, imbues even the chilly morning air with serenity
Across the valley to the south, Talakha Goemba, on the hilltop that is often suffused with the last of the sun’s rays, sits amidst frosted mountains
Somewhere in the sky, high above Thimphu valley, the misty clouds part to reveal a snowy peak
Buildings in the valley veiled in the mist

A perfect morning for a bike ride!

A photogenic moment
We understand why the Japanese artist Hokusai painted Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji
Logs and a tractor look strangely like they belong in a fairytale
Pure white, and pure colour
Eventually the bedazzling sunlight breaks through clouds
Outside Tashichhodzong
Birds fly over paddy fields near a snow-covered Tashichhodzong
Rice fields, Tashichhodzong, and the serene Wang chhu under a traditional bridge, in snow
Changangkha Lhakhang, and quickly melting snow
By late morning, Mr. Bottlecap-eyes is the only one left to watch the snow melt away

Amazing camerawork! The landscapes and monuments look so good in the snow. The pictures make me feel wonderful about living in Bhutan, where everything is so close to nature and Buddhism. Let us not lose them for anything in the world.

Wow. Breath taking, stunning, sheer beauty… Even for someone coming from a country Switzerland – where winter has regular snow falls.
