The calendar for October features a typical Tshechu scene of a mask dancer performing a religious dance before hundreds of viewers. These iconic annual festivals are held in most districts during autumn, adding colour to the season in Bhutan.
Tshechus have remained unchanged over the centuries- monks perform dances describing Buddhist deities and teachings, and the costumes and masks have special and specific significance. The festivals embody a living cultural heritage of Bhutan and remain important opportunities for the community to celebrate together. Increasingly, as a glimpse into the unique culture of Bhutan, they have gained popularity as attractions for visitors.
The dancer depicted in the calendar photograph is wearing a mask representing a bird. Tshechu dances are considered sacred- viewing them is akin to receiving teachings and blessings.
