Her Majesty Gyalyum Phuntsho Choden Wangchuck, the Queen of His Majesty King Jigme Wangchuck, was born in 1911 at Wangduecholing Palace in Bumthang.
Her Majesty become Druk Gyaltsuen upon wedding His Majesty the Second Druk Gyalpo in 1927. Her Majesty passed away in 2003, at the age of 93.
“Of course, Her Majesty was renown across the Kingdom for her legendary beauty,” says former Thrimchi Lyonpo Sonam Tobgye. “Those who served at the Royal Court described her as exceptionally wise and intelligent, gracious, generous, and truly noble. The Second Druk Gyalpo was known for being firm and exacting to those who served at the Royal Court. Her Majesty, in her unending compassion, would always intervene for Royal pardon on behalf of anyone who had erred.
His Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo deeply revered the Queen Mother, and treated Her Majesty with the greatest respect and deference throughout his reign.
Her Majesty was a Dharma Queen, and the numerous patronages and endowments to some of our most important sacred temples and lhakhangs are her legacy. Her Majesty was an embodiment of all 10 celestial virtues associated with a Queen. All those who served and knew Her Majesty were deeply privileged to do so.”
